TOK Blog Are physical properties such as temperature invented or discovered? Even tho we don’t know exactly how temperature was invented or discovered we know for sure the Galileo Galilei was the first human being that came up with the idea of an instrument able to calculate the temperature know as a thermometer. Many scientist don’t really recognize Galilei’s instrument as a thermometer but, more as thermoscope because his device only showed the change in temperature and had no scale .The measurement of temperature consist of “The process of measuring a current local temperature for immediate or later evaluation.” Celcius In 1742 two years before his death Celcius created a scale which was reversed a 0° represented the boiling point of water and 100° represented the freezing point of water. Kelvin In 1848, William Thomson created the Absolute Thermometric Scale that could measure the absolute zero as the scale's null point, and in which he used the Celsius as

The creation of Temperature

Is Temperature Created? Temperature is the measurement of how cold or hot something is compared to baselines; those baselines are usually the freezing points and boiling points of water. Temperature is usually used to measure the heat present such as water, solid, soil, people and in meteorology it measures the heat content of the atmosphere. The instrument that measures the temperature of an object is a thermometer. A Greek physician and scientist, Galen had the first attempt to create a thermometer. The information that you may found would describe in details the founding of the thermometer and how the different measuring degrees Celsius, Kelvin and Fahrenheit which are used to measure temperature. Even though Celsius and Kelvin have the same magnitude, the baseline of these scales are different. 1 The inventions that were created were the thermometers to be able to enumerate the values received from the scientists. But, the values themselves weren’t

Was density invented or discovered

To begin with, what is the difference between invented and discovered? “A discovery is recognizing something that already exists for the first time, that nobody has found before, e.g. how Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas. An invention is creating something totally new with one's own ideas and development. Although an invention is completely new to the world, the physical material needed for its production already exists, e.g. how Thomas Edison invented the light bulb.” Density is a physical property of matter that expresses a relationship of mass to volume. The more mass an object contains in a given space, the more dense it is. “ Sometime around 250 BCE, the Greek mathematician Archimedes was given the task of determining whether a craftsman had defrauded the King of Syracuse by replacing some of the gold in the King's crown with silver. Archimedes thought about the problem while relaxing in a bathing pool. As he entered the pool, he noticed that water spil

Are physical properties such as temperature invented or discovered? Temperature itself was not invented. Even though there were no ways to calculate temperature during the earliest days of our planet, every area has, and always had a specific temperature. However, the methods we use to quantify temperature such as thermometers and scales were invented for our convenience. Even though temperature was always there, it wasn’t until 1593 when Galileo invented the first rudimentary water thermometer to become the first person to put a number on temperature. In 1709, a “German physicist named Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first alcohol thermometer and the first mercury thermometer in 1714.” (Mary Bellis) (Mercury thermometers are still prominent in today's society.) In 1724, the first temperature scale was named after its creator “The Fahrenheit Scale.” The Celsius Scale was invented by a Swedish astronomer named Anders Celsius. “The Celsius scale is often t

The truth about recycling

The truth about recycling According to The Economist the amount of municipal waste being collected in different countries has increased over the last years. According to the European Union statistics presented on The Economist stated that the amount of municipal waste produced in Western Europe has been raised by 23% between 1995 and 2003, meaning 577 kg per person. A trend has been observed where the recycling rate has been shown to be increasing in European countries and in America.   The only problem regarding recycling was observed when the kerbside recycling program was introduced, researchers wondered whether the program produced more energy than it saved because of the transportation and collection of these materials. 1 The efficiency debate on recycling can be separated into two parts: economic and environmental. The importance of recycling on our environment is not a matter that needs to

Recycling Energy Effective?

Recycling Energy Effective? Is recycling really effective or worth it? We have been told that one of the best way to preserve our planet “green” is by the mean of recycling, but is it really true ? We need to define what’s recycling first “ Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. It is an alternative that can save material and help lower greenhouse gas emissions.” 1 Now we need to determine if it’s true that recycling energy is an advantage. Energy recycling Energy recycling would be the process of reusing energy use to make materials instead of making the same materials with a new source of energy. This alone save a lot of energy because the process of extracting the source of energy then, transportation of the energy and finally the refinement of the energy will be eliminated if we reuse energy. It’s not only from an economic point of view we see the advantages but also less energy would be used throughout the process from

Recycling: Yay or Nay? A question that often is asked whenever the topic of recycling is at hand, is about how effective recycling processes are. After all, couldn’t the process just add on to existing production costs? Well, put simply, No. A common misconception is that recycling uses up more energy than making something new. In reality, recycling saves a large amounts of quantities of energy. For example, recycling aluminium cans can save up to 95% of the energy that would be required to make new ones from the raw materials - recycling a single glass bottle saves enough energy to power a 100 watt light bulb for hours.² In effect, the reasoning as to why recycling happens to be energy efficient in almost all cases is due to the fact that recycled materials call for much less processing in order to once again serve as useful materials. According to the American Geosciences Institute, two such processes which demonstrate this effect are that of glass and aluminium manufacturi
